Daily Practice To Improve Your Relationships

How to create calm and peace within yourself

by Donnalynn Riley

Figuring out how to improve your relationships can often be frustrating and require help. However, there is something you can do on your own, without even having to tell anyone that will help you find ease in every encounter.

Recent scientific research has shown that we, as a species, enjoy our lives more and get along with each other better when we are calm and relaxed. In fact, quiet time and contemplation have been linked to better brain function, stem cell growth and an immune system boost. So you benefit greatly, plus your relationships benefit. It is win, win.

So many of us either don’t know how to get quiet in our minds, or find it impossible. Here is a great way to enjoy yourself and benefit your relationships:
Soothing sounds really help create calm in your body and in your mind!

And this is significant to your relationships because everything goes better when you are calm, relaxed, happy and cooperative in your own life.

In this world of auditory chaos and overload, paying attention to what sounds you listen to on purpose is an extremely important element in creating the relationships you want. Most of the sounds we are exposed to, from deafening construction sounds to anxiety producing TV and radio and the sound of our collaborators’ irritating voices, most sounds are not sounds that have a positive effect on the mind and body.

The sounds of nature and pleasant classical music have been measured to have a positive effect on the listener’s mood, emotions, memory and even physicality.

This is a powerful tool for you to use to set up your interactions.

Get yourself some soothing outdoor sounds and listen in the morning before you go out into the world to start your day right. Put on some classical music (my favorite is Albinoni) or nature sounds when you get home to relax if you like. Perhaps the most powerful (and my “go-to”) way to stay in charge of your emotions during the day is using headphones during a break – scoot off to the restroom or duck outside for a few minutes and just listen & breath. Allow yourself the 2 or 3 minutes to make your own life better. You will be amazed at the positive effects this has on your relationships.

There are many nature sound recordings out there. I cherish this recording of the early morning birdsong in the beautiful Berkshires in MA. (Plus, I recorded and produced it!) It is easy to download right to your phone or computer. Email me if you would like to get this recording!

The specific nature sounds are combined with wind chimes to get the greatest relaxation effect possible. No matter what recording you use, find something that helps your heart rate decrease and the back of your neck loosen up.

Relax & Have Fun!

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
